What is Gum Disease?

Known medically as periodontal disease, gum disease is a common condition that affects nearly half of all American adults at some point in their lives. It is a progressive disease that occurs in two stages: the early stage, gingivitis and the advanced stage, periodontitis. Common symptoms of gingivitis are often minor and present without pain. Symptoms include infections in the gums that can cause swelling, redness or bleeding when brushing or flossing.

If treated in the early stage, gum disease is easily reversible.

Gum disease treatment includes improved oral hygiene, professional cleanings, and medicated toothpastes or mouth rinses. Once gum disease advances into periodontitis, it requires specialized treatment to reverse the effects and restore optimal oral health. Symptoms of periodontitis include receding gums, visible tooth roots, infections between the teeth and gums, and infections in the jawbone and the tissues that support your teeth. This can cause your teeth to loosen and lead to permanent tooth loss.

What Causes Gum Disease?

Gum disease is caused by the buildup of bacterial plaque and tartar on your teeth. The buildup of plaque and tartar is a result of poor oral hygiene and at-home care. Other health and lifestyle factors can contribute to the development of gum disease. These factors can include family history, diabetes, smoking and tobacco use, certain medications, or hormonal changes due to puberty, pregnancy or menopause.

How is Gum Disease Treated?

If you’re suffering from gum disease, schedule an appointment with Dalton Dental today. Dr. Dalton is board certified in periodontal treatment and can offer a variety of comprehensive gum disease treatments. Depending on your needs, she can recommend:

  • Scaling and Root Planing: Also called a deep cleaning, Dr. Dalton first performs a scaling to remove the built-up plaque and tartar from the surface of your teeth. Then our dentist will perform a root planing, smoothing the roots of your teeth to keep bacteria from adhering to your tooth roots in the future.
  • Gum Graft Surgery: Dr. Dalton performs this surgical procedure to replace diseased gums with healthy tissue, reversing the effects of gum recession.
  • Dental Crown Lengthening: Dr. Dalton performs this procedure to remove excess gum tissue and expose more of the natural tooth for restoration.
  • Gum Rejuvenation Lift: If you have a “gummy” smile, Dr. Dalton recommends this procedure to recontour your gum line for a more natural and aesthetically pleasing smile. Gingivectomy: Dr. Dalton performs this procedure to remove diseased gum tissue and promote healthy tissue growth.
  • Root Surface Debridement: Dr. Dalton uses a special ultrasonic device to remove stubborn built-up plaque and tartar from the surface of your tooth roots.
  • Advanced Laser Gum Surgery: This is a minimally invasive alternative to a traditional gingivectomy. Dr. Dalton uses a special laser tool to trim away diseased or damaged gum tissue and promote healthy gum growth.
  • Osseous or Pocket Reduction Surgery: Dr. Dalton performs this surgical procedure to clear the infection from the spaces (called periodontal pockets) that develop between your teeth and receding gum tissue. She will clean out the bacteria from the pockets and reduce the size of the pockets, promoting the growth of healthy gum tissue.
  • Ridge Augmentation and Preservation: Dr. Dalton performs this procedure following a tooth extraction to help recreate or preserve the natural shape of your gums and jawbone.
  • Regenerative Procedures: Dr. Dalton may recommend regenerative procedures to help restore or replace bone tissues lost due to periodontitis.
  • Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation: Dr. Dalton performs this minimally invasive procedure to loosen gum tissue by accessing it through a small pinhole created by dental instruments.
